Melbourne Trip #3

A couple of weeks ago, my fiancée and I traveled to Melbourne to attend one of our good friends weddings Carlo & Renee (Congrat's guys!). Anyway, we spent a couple of nights in the city, and then a couple of nights up in the Dandenong Ranges. I learnt more about about Melbourne this time around then I did the previous two times, so I thought I'd share:

Europe Trip 2009 Summary/Tips

I've been back home for almost 4 weeks now, but am only just finding the time to write a bit of a summary of my partner (now fiancé!) and I's first trip around Europe! Yes, I'm engaged! I'd be a pretty bad future husband if I didn't mention this in the first paragraph, wouldn't I! Still can't believe it, but I'll reveal the details to those who I know in person, sorry! This post is mainly about sharing the lessons (both the easy and hard ways) we learnt on our trip.

Below is an approximate route of our journey through Europe:

Back to work and Busy!

It's been over a week now since we got back from Sydney, so why haven't I posted? To put it simply - I haven't had a chance to even check this place!

We arrived back on Wednesday 24th, which was followed by a fierce scramble to get things ready for EGN Lan 3.1 on that Saturday (27th Jan). In the middle of all of this, was Australia Day too (26th), so I lost a week day waiting for the fireworks with friends, and then watching them..

Then the work week started on Monday, and all the work that had piled up while I was away for the past 2 weeks, was now urgent and due the day before yesterday (at the time). So all of this week, I've been real busy trying to get on top of things - it's actually been quite good though and I feel motivated.

Anyway, the Sydney trip was indeed one to remember. Since my partner had forced me to let her come, she conveniently went on the partners programme while the conference was on. Anyway, because of her I met a lot more people then I would have normally - as she met some of the partners of some of the speakers, which led to me meeting a few of the speakers, one of them (top bloke too), was a RedHat graphics guy and Inkscape ambassador: Andy Fitzsimon.

This was the first time I had attended an LCA, and I have to say I was very impressed with the number of speakers, the range of topics and free Wifi Access!. Everything from PHP Security/Performance sessions with Rasmus Lordoff (which was why I attended the conference, and well worth it), to building your own Segway, or using PHP to transmit/receive serial signals - so you can have letterbox (real mail) sensors! Luckily, for those that did not attend, and thanks to the cool LCA2007 team, just about every talk was digitally recorded. Check it all out from: LCA2007 Programme.

The real reason of an LCA though is to meet and network with people - something I probably only realised until about mid week through the conference. It was a bit unsual and unsettling to be around geeks that were mosty smarter then me. The cool thing is though, that everyone attending is obsessed with Open Source and Linux - so everyone is open minded and friendly. The next conference is due around the same time of year, 2008, in Melbourne. My partner and I are already planning to go.. hopefully by then I will be a bit more prepared and I won't be attending not knowing anyone.

One Sleep to go until lca2007

One sleep to go before we fly off to Sydney for the Linux Conference (lca2007) starting on Monday !

I've alreayd printed off the programme and highlighted which tutorials and lectures I'm going to attend.. hopefully the good ones aren't `too` popular.

The mailing list they setup has proven useful, since they started it last week, there have been heaps of activity on there. I mae a post about notebook necessity and security, and got about 20 replies back within the hour - that's something you can expect from the Linux/Open Source community, willingness to help their fellow human being out.

Still got to finish off some last minute work this evening, clean up the house, and do the packing.

1 week and counting to Sydney

This time next week, if everything goes to planned, my gf (Katrina) and I, will have landed in Sydney and be settling in to our Hotel.

We are going for 10 days, the first 5 days will be for the Linux Conference which starts on Monday 15th.. and the second 5 days will be rest and relaxation. Mind you, my GF is not going to the conference, she doesn't know, or want to know about Linux... But she's going on the `Partners Programme` which the Conference organisers, have so conveniently organised! Good job lads!

Anyway, you might ask - why would you travel 4000 km's to listen to nerds talk about Linux for a few days ? My answer is, to learn more about the best thing since sliced bread - Linux and Open Source ! Sheesh..!

One thing I have heard (even from my mother) is that the I.T. industry is always changing - changing technologies, changing attitudes, and changing technologies.. again.. :) Nothing much really happens here in Perth, so to the Linux Conferernce in Sydney it is!

The conference is held every year in an Australian city, and last time it was in Perth, (2003), I missed it.. so this will be my first - and will probably be the largest, since Sydney and the UNSW is so big (apparently).

This is my first trip in over 2 years.. now to prey I don't get mugged by ice bandits on the notorious streets of Sydney..
